The expansion was released on November 13, 2007 and is the 14th expansion for EverQuest. The expansion starts in Steamfont Mountains and branches off into Loping Plains and Dragonscale Hills. Loping Plains leads to Hills of Shade, Crypt of Shade, and Bloodmoon Keep. Dragonscale Hills leads to Crystallos and Fortress Mechanotus. Inside Fortress Mechanotus are several more zones: S.H.I.P. Workshop, Steam Factory, Meldrath's Majestic Mansion, Gyrospire Beza, and Gyrospire Zeka.

There are several raid zones and instanced zones.

Crystallos is the home of the prismatic dragon, Kerafyrm, and is a raid zone protected by heavy hitting mobs with tons of hitpoints in the ramp up to Crystallos. It is also a keyed zone.

Meldrath's Majestic Mansion is another raid zone also locked behind a key.

Bloodmoon Keep is both a live and instanced zone that is used by missions given by the Fang Breaker camp.

Loping Plains, Hills of Shade, and Dragonscale Hills are all live zones.

Factions

Spells

Unlike the different ranks in the spells from TSS and TBS, the ranks in SoF spells actually make a difference.

You can obtain your Rank 1 and 2 spells in a number of ways. There are "Suppliers" in several zones surrounded by NPCs on a certain faction. Only a few Rank 2 spells are available on the Suppliers and the rest need to be looted. They con dubious at first and require you to kill mobs on opposing faction, quest, or do missions before you can see what they have. At this time (Nov 07), it appears that while missions are much harder and take longer, they don't give that much more faction then quests and if you were in a hurry to get faction, you are better off doing quests and killing mobs on opposing faction. As an example, to bring up your faction with Ak'Anon Strike Force V quickly, you should do quests at the farm in Dragonscale Hills for a few hours.

Some Rank 1 spells are obtained by drops only and drop in specific places. Some Rank 2 spells are also drop only but drop zonewide in certain zones. The Rank 2 spells have a much lower drop rate due to being droppable from all the mobs in the zone.

Armor

SoF has upgradable armor similar to some previous expansions. The initial armor is archetype-specific.

(X - matches slot: feet, legs, chest, head, arms, bracer, gloves)

Various named mobs can drop Steam Cores which can be used to upgrade the Tier 1 armor to Tier 2. Each Steam Core has a type that is intended for each class (2 classes/type). However, the Steam Cores can be converted between types by buying an item for approximately 50kpp. The Steam Core and the (un-auged) Tier 1 armor piece can be combined in a container purchased by the cannon in Dragonscale Hills (requires kindly to Ak'anon Strike Force V).

Elder mobs in Crystallos can drop elemental essences (Ice, Fire, Earth, Air) that can be combined in a grafter (purchased from Aring in DSH with Amiable to Crusaders of Veeshan)with the Tier 2 armor piece to create Tier 3 armor. There are two types of grafters that can be purchased: Elemental Essence Grafter and Prismaridescent Essence Grafter. The Prismaridescent is used to combine all 4 types of essences to upgrade the Tier 2 armor to Tier 4 armor. Supposedly the Tier 3 armor's essences can be removed.

  • Tier 1: named drop, tradeable.
  • Tier 2: upgrade Tier 1 with Steam Core:type (2 classes per type, types can be altered with 50kpp and faction)
  • Tier 3: upgrade Tier 2 with individual essence drop from Elders in Crystallos (creates 4 flavors: earth, air, fire, ice)
  • Tier 4: upgrade Tier 2 with all 4 Crystallos essences.

Example: Glossy Silk Sleeves => Intense Silk Sleeves => Intense Frostsilk Sleeves (Ice Essence added) => Prismatic Spellbinder's Sleeves (4 essences)

Zones

Progression

Group

Groups can progress through Secrets of Faydwer and gain access to the 2 locked zones by performing a lengthy quest for each. The first is access to Meldrath's Majestic Mansion and is required to be completed before access to Crystallos can be completed.

Raid

Raid progression is actually performed as a continuation of the quests that grant access to both the keyed zones above. Please refer to the 2 progression tasks themselves for details.
